Medical billing and coding professionals play a vital role in today’s healthcare industry. It is how those in the healthcare field keep track of the data and paperwork involved with medical procedures, and keep information flowing efficiently between medical service providers and insurance companies.

About the Program
This 164-hour class is taught in a hybrid format, incorporating classroom and online learning. Class meets 2 evenings a week and students should expect to spend at least 10 hours of work outside the classroom. Upon completion of the class, students will sit for the Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam from AAPC (American Academy of Professional Coders).

- Anatomy and medical terminology
- Principles of medical billing
- Understanding health insurance
- Fundamentals of medical coding
- Most up-to-date information on CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS coding
- Evaluation and management review
- Experitise in reviewing and assigning correct procedure and diagnostic codes
- Preparation for the AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam
- High School Diploma or Equivalent (HiSET, GED)
- 2.5 GPA in high school or college study

Alisha Vorthmann, RN. BSN, teaches the anatomy and medical terminology portion of the class. Alisha received her Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing from Nebraska Methodist College in 2006. She has worked in the areas of medical surgical nursing, the cardiac cath lab and the cardiac center as well as mental health nursing. Since 2009, Alisha has been passionate about teaching in the continuing health education department at Iowa Western.
Vicki Workman, CPC, CPMA, CPC-I, CEMC teaches the medical coding portion of the class. Vicki currently works for CHI Health as a Coding Educator and Chart Reviewer for physician services. She has been a past president and currently holds the membership chair for the local coding chapter, Metro Omaha Coders group. Vicki's background includes working as a Medical Assistant before becoming a certified coder in 2000. She enjoys teaching and helping others develop a passion for coding like she does.
Dawn Goodsell, RHIA, CCS, CPC, COC, CPC-I also teaches the medical coding portion of the class. Dawn has been working as a full-time faculty instructor at Metro Community College for 7 years and an additional 3 years prior as an adjunct faculty instructor in the HIM program. Prior to teaching full-time, Dawn worked for UNMC for nearly 25 years with coding, billing, auditing, and chart extracting. She is a lifelong learner, a strong advocate for education and helping people reach their full potential.
Career and Salary Information
Most medical billing and coding specialists work in hospitals, clinics, or physician offices. Some find employment with long-term care facilities, home health services, private medical billing and coding companies, or with the government. Medical billing and coding careers are expected to grow 21% by 2020. Expected wage range is $14 - $20 per hour.
$2,995 includes books, handouts/resources, AAPC student membership for 1 year and CPC exam. Fee must accompany registration. Money order/cashier’s check/credit card only—no personal checks accepted.
