About the Program
This unique, first-of-its-kind program brings together industry and academia to meet the needs of the marketplace. Students in this program learn to build 3D virtual products using Siemens Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software, the world’s leading product lifecycle management program. The software will introduce students to product design and development technology used by many of the world’s leading manufacturing, architectural, and construction companies. The coursework will help prepare students to develop technical drawings and plans to build everything from microchips to skyscrapers. Unlike other computer-aided design programs, PLM allows the Design Technologist to build the virtual product, test it, and make adjustments without building a prototype of any kind. This high-tech software allows companies to build better products faster, saving them valuable time and money.
Design Technologists bridge the gap between engineers and production by using the specifications provided by the engineers to build a virtual product, test the product virtually, and then work with production to design a plan for building the product. Graduates of this program will be sought by companies in nearly every industry including aerospace, construction, consumer products, transportation, heavy machinery, robotics, manufacturing, and many more. Design Technology jobs are in high demand. In fact, with many retirements on the horizon, companies like Kiewit, Winnebago, and Rockwell Collins have jobs waiting for our graduates right now.
Upon the successful completion of the program students will:
- Students should be able to create fully detailed 3D models of parts, assemblies and drawings using multiple software packages.
- Demonstrate and apply concepts and standard practices of the electrical design process.
- Demonstrate and apply the basic terminology associated with these (manufacturing) fields.
- Demonstrate effective leadership, communication, teamwork, and time management skills.
- Demonstrate the use of design problem solving, creative thinking, project planning and teamwork through a challenging design and build project.
- Communicate fundamental engineering reporting and communication by using project plans, design reviews, and project reports.
- Model appropriate skills which enhance and promote on–the-job success and demonstrate knowledge of appropriate strategies for securing and changing jobs.
- Explain and demonstrate the basic use and operation of Siemen’s® PLM software system in a team design and development environment.
- Demonstrate the application of proper dimensions, datum features, geometric tolerances, and feature control frames.
- Describe what constitutes a CAD/CAM system, and how to use 3D models to create and optimize cutter paths.
- Calculate the reaction forces at the supports of a rigid body at rest.
- Design and analyze mechanical components and structures in order to identify failure points and minimize concentration areas.
- Analyze the stresses and the corresponding deformations in various structural members, considering axial loading, torsion, and pure bending.
- Describe the strong interrelationships between material properties and manufacturing processes.
- Demonstrate the ability to create the proper design of assemblies and components to meet desired needs within realistic constraints.
